Hi, I’m Angel Holmes—founder of The Brighter Side Society, where ambitious women find accountability, community, and systems that make success simple.
✨Stop doing business alone.

Building a support system as an entrepreneur is the one business strategy most people never talk about — and it might be the most important investment you make in your success. You can have the best business plan in the world, but if you’re building your dreams in isolation, you’re fighting an uphill battle that nobody should have to fight alone.
In Episode 15 of Never Stop Dreaming Biggie, my husband Brian — the famous “Director of No Fun” — and my son Chase joined me for an unfiltered live Q&A with The Brighter Side Society community. What came out of that conversation was a raw, honest look at why family support and community are the secret ingredients that transform impossible dreams into inevitable realities.
The Hidden Challenge: Entrepreneur Loneliness Is Real
Here’s what nobody talks about in business circles: the loneliness factor. According to a study by Vistaprint, nearly half of small business owners report feeling lonely, and that isolation directly impacts both mental health and business performance.
You can have all the strategy in the world, but if the people around you don’t understand your vision — or worse, actively discourage your “crazy” ideas — building a support system as an entrepreneur becomes urgent, not optional.
I’ve been called crazy more times than I can count. When I started a photo booth business, people said the market was saturated. When I launched BevCon, they questioned the need for another conference. When I announced plans for a Caribbean bar, friends literally asked if I’d lost my mind. But here’s the thing — you’re not crazy, you’re just first. And when you’re first, you need people who will believe in your vision even when they can’t see it yet.
My Personal Story: What Building a Support System as an Entrepreneur Really Looks Like
Let me get vulnerable with you. When I went through bankruptcy after BevCon, I was at my lowest point. Brian and I had just started dating, and instead of running for the hills, he stayed. He didn’t just stay — he helped me rebuild. When covid wiped out my businesses, he was there again. And now, as we plan The Holmestead Hideaway in the Caribbean, he’s not just supportive — he’s actively planning the logistics.
My sons have been to more business events than most adults. They’ve stuffed name badges, moved tables, and probably rolled their eyes at my entrepreneurial enthusiasm a thousand times. But they showed up. Chase literally grew up helping me set up festival tents and conference displays. Riley has been my unofficial brand photographer since middle school.
These men didn’t have to show up like this. They chose to. And that choice has been the difference between giving up and pushing through in my darkest moments.
The Support System Framework for Entrepreneurs
After years of building businesses with incredible support around me, I’ve identified what I call the Support System Framework. This is the foundation of building a support system as an entrepreneur that actually sustains you through the hard seasons.
S — Show up consistently Your people need to be present for the mundane moments, not just the victories. Brian comes to menopause events with me. Let that sink in. That’s what showing up really looks like.
U — Understand the vision, even when they don’t fully get it They don’t need to fully grasp your business model, but they need to trust that you do. Chase still doesn’t understand half of what I’m building, but he knows it matters to me.
P — Provide practical help Real support isn’t just cheerleading. It’s Brian handling the engineering logistics while I handle the creative vision. It’s Chase helping with physical setup at events.
P — Protect your dreams Your support system becomes your buffer zone when others question your decisions. They shield you from the noise so you can keep building.
O — Offer honest feedback Brian will tell me when an idea isn’t fully thought through. That’s not discouragement — that’s helping me build stronger foundations. Research from Harvard Business Review shows that entrepreneurs with trusted advisors who give honest feedback make better decisions and recover from setbacks faster.
R — Remain patient during the process Building anything meaningful takes time. Your support system needs to understand that overnight success is a myth — and be willing to stay for the long game.
T — Trust your judgment Even when they don’t understand, they trust that you know what you’re doing.
How to Audit Your Support System as an Entrepreneur
Here’s your action step this week: conduct a support system audit. Write down the names of the five people closest to you. For each person, ask:
If you’re surrounded by people who consistently discourage your vision, you need to expand your circle intentionally. This doesn’t mean cutting people out — it means being deliberate about seeking supporters who understand ambition. Psychology Today has excellent resources on building healthy supportive relationships if you need a starting point.
Building a Support System as an Entrepreneur When You Don’t Have Natural Family Support
Not everyone has a Brian. Not everyone grew up with people who encouraged big dreams. If that’s your reality, here’s the honest truth: building a support system as an entrepreneur is going to require more intentional effort — but it is absolutely possible.
You’ll need to:
Your dreams are too important to build in isolation. The Entreprenista League and communities like The Brighter Side Society exist specifically because so many ambitious women needed exactly this kind of intentional support network.
The Community Solution: Your Extended Entrepreneurial Family
This is exactly why I built The Brighter Side Society — because not everyone has built-in family support, but every ambitious woman deserves a community that functions like one. People who will cheer you on, hold you accountable, and show up when you need them most.
In our community, women are finding their business sisters. They’re getting the encouragement their immediate circles might not provide. They’re discovering that their “crazy” ideas aren’t crazy at all — they’re just first.
Building a support system as an entrepreneur doesn’t always start at home. Sometimes it starts with finding your people in a room full of women who are dreaming just as big as you are.
Your Challenge This Week
Identify one person in your life who consistently supports your biggest dreams. Thank them specifically — not a vague “thanks for everything” but a real, detailed acknowledgment of how their support has changed your journey.
Then identify one area where you need more support and take one action to find it — whether that’s joining a community, reaching out to a potential mentor, or having an honest conversation with someone already in your circle.
Share your support system wins inside The Brighter Side Society. Let’s celebrate the people who make our dreams possible.
The Truth About Dreams and the People Around Them
Building a support system as an entrepreneur isn’t a soft skill — it’s a survival skill. Your dreams will only grow as big as the support system you build around them. You can have all the strategy, skills, and determination in the world, but if you’re trying to build something meaningful without a foundation of real support, you’re building on shaky ground.
The right people don’t just tolerate your dreams — they become invested in making them happen. They don’t cheer from the sidelines — they roll up their sleeves and get in the game with you.
