You know that moment when a new idea hits and you can’t tell if it’s genius or just another shiny object stealing your focus?
Been there. Multiple times this week.
Here’s what I’ve learned after 30+ years of building things (and abandoning a few along the way):
It’s probably a distraction if:
• You’re using it to avoid hard work on your current project
• It requires you to completely start over instead of building on what you have
• You can’t explain how it connects to your bigger vision
• The excitement fades after 48 hours
• You’re jumping ship because things got challenging
It’s probably your next big move if:
• It builds on skills and relationships you already have
• It solves a problem you keep encountering
• People are already asking you for this solution
• It aligns with your long-term vision (even if the path isn’t clear) • The idea keeps coming back even when you try to ignore it
The Brighter Side Society @thebrightersidesociety was an idea that wouldn’t leave me alone. Even when I tried to talk myself out of it, even when I thought I was “too scattered” to help other women get focused, it kept surfacing.
The Holmestead Bar + Retreat @theholmesteadbar ? Same thing. People kept telling me I was dreaming too big, but the vision wouldn’t fade.
Your multi-passionate mind isn’t broken—it’s brilliant at seeing connections and opportunities. The key is learning to filter them through your bigger purpose instead of chasing every spark.
Trust the ideas that build on what you’ve already learned. Question the ones that ask you to start from scratch.
What idea keeps coming back to you no matter how hard you try to ignore it?
